The OG team is back together to solve another murder mystery. When a dead body shows up at Pendergasts doorstep, he is led to an abandoned mine where he is attacked. Leaving him mysteriously ill. Meanwhile, back at the museum, an employee is found murdered. These things are connected, but how, and how is the Pendergast family to blame?

The Pendergast books continue their climb in quality in this, the 14th book in the popular series. As always, Pendergast finds himself drawn into mysterious and compelling crimes. This time, however, it all ties back to his family's mysterious past. Several of the secrets about Pendergast's family that werew hinted at in previous novels are made clear, and Constance finally finds herself back in the center of the action. Of course, other members of Pendergast's extended family make an appearance, as they work to assist Pendergast before time runs out.

This is probably in my top 5 Pendergast novels, but it does rely pretty heavily on knowledge of the previous books in the series, so I wouldn't start here.

I agree with many of the other people who have written that this book is a great addition to the series. There isn't too much that can be said without spoiling the "thrill of the read". This makes me want to go back and reread the first 13 books - a great summer project!

while I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I wish that Pendergast would go back to Solving "strange" crimes and not his own families crimes.

This was another great outing with Pendergast. Except in this book, we get to see much more of Constance Greene. I really love the mystery behind her and her backstory. It is spread through several of the books, in fits and starts, but here there's a bit more backstory regarding her and Pendergast's ancestors. It is that ancestry that makes up the body of this story. The conflict of the son against the father and the father against his own patronage, mingle to great effect. I want to know more now about the various branches and secret histories of the Pendergast family. I imagine it'll take another 14 books to get there. I'm looking forward to it.
