The way this book devolves into absolute chaos by the final chapters…it’s fabulous!

The AXLP books are at their best when D’Agosta and Margo join forces. The OGs of the series. We’re treated to Constance being an absolute menace while racing the clock to save Pendy’s life. I love the plot involving the bad guy having an understandable motive, also.

I considered removing a smidgen of a star for a hospital scene at the end where flashing an NYPD badge seems to command the docs and nurses (that wouldn’t happen…no way, no how), but it was so brief and inconsequential to the story that I let it slide.

ON TO THE NEXT!

This installment in the Pendergast series takes a deeper dive into his family history, featuring a mysterious illness, and multi levels of revenge and redemption. As with the majority of books in this series it's surely not a standalone read and wouldn't make sense to a reader not familiar with the characters leading up to this point; those characters are now further developed in interesting, and somewhat dark, new ways. This book was a real thriller I'm looking forward to seeing what happens next.

The worldbuilding in this book was fantastic, and it paid off splendidly. The characters were very likeable (in terms of writing, not all of them in terms of personality) and Constance particularly stood out in this one.

Advice for potential readers. Don't have "just one more chapter before sleeping". I did and wound up finishing the last 70% in a binge instead of sleeping....now it is morning.

Clever book. Satisfying and wish-fulfilling fight scenes. Alabaster skin-having good times. Highly recommended (although most of the books in this series are technically stand-alone, I don't recommend starting with this one, but with Relic).

My favourite of the series. Those new to Pendergast should not begin here as many secondary characters from previous books play major roles. Also, the climax of this book is the most gruesome, horrific, and satisfying in the series. Without spoiling anything, I will allow an image to provide a glimpse.

Another great and exciting read from Preston & Child. Do you know what Triflic Acid and Thismia Americana are? I didn't until I read this book.

Enjoyable, as usual for Preston and Child.
