Reckless Hearts

Jax Calder

4.3 AVERAGE

Reckless Hearts, Rainbow Redemption book two, by Jax Calder is a more painful read than one might expect from a romance novel, especially since Calder is so deft with humor. Seb plays a minor but significant role in Beautiful Hearts, but it isn’t until book two that we meet Marcus, Seb’s older sister’s best friend since late high school. The book begins then, and wends it way forward to the present without either making everything early in their relationship feel like a prologue or making the story feel slow. Please take the author’s content warnings seriously and know that the story feels loving and authentic throughout, but especially at the end.

Such a great book! I read this book in one sitting and could not put it down. I loved it, it's an emotional, hurt/comfort, hard fought HEA. With some angst, but so worth it. I loved both main characters, Seb is so sweet and authentic, and Marcus is so hurt but so nice and really only wants what's best for Seb. I really enjoyed the writing, the building of the relationship, the chemistry, all the feelings that books brought me.

This is the second of the series, it can completely be read as a standalone, but it has spoilers from the first one, that I totally recommend as well.

Be sure to check for triggers.

I got an ARC and this is my honest review.

This is the first Jax Calder book that I have read so I had no idea what I was getting into!
There are a lot of complex issues throughout this book - from sisters best friend, a sister that thinks the world needs to revolve around her and an insecure main character.

Despite this, I was drawn into the story that spans over ten years as the characters continue to grow and face new challenges within their lives.

I was a little bit hesitant when Seb starts working with one of NZ's endangered species as I have worked with this species myself, but Calder has done a lot of research into the plight of this bird and the work that is going into the recovery of the Tara iti and portrayed it wonderfully.

It is the 8th January and I already know this is going to remain one of my favourite reads of 2025. This broke my heart in the best way. Definitely check trigger warnings before going in, but the hard topics were so well written and Marcus & Seb’s story was beautiful.
