The Secrets of Jane by Charlotte Mallory.
Overall I give it a 3/5 stars. The writing in the beginning of the book kind of bothered me but the more I read, I did start to enjoy it. I will be reading book 2.
Spoilers below:
“Oh darlin’, it’s these t1ts. You always get the pricks in the weeds with these girls, but they also land me my stallions.” She wickedly grins while looking at her nails.”
This is one bit of the writing that I’m like hmmmm…..
But the book is about Jane. She’s been hiding for most of her life because her father is a warlord and he kept his family hidden from Sculls Row. She also has a tattoo that gives her station with the warlords but women aren’t meant to get the tattoo just sons.
Jane gets into bar fights a lot and it put her on the radar of skulls rows and asked Soren who is a mercenary to collect her for questioning. His power is reading people’s emotions and intentions and it’s so strong he can almost read your thoughts. Jane is also a healer. Soren captures her and is going to take her back to sculls row for questioning, she does manage to escape because she knows the siren song and was able to lure him in with their chemistry and get him to put his guard down so she could sing and hed fall asleep. He ends up catching her later on because he could still see her intentions. He promises he’d save her and keep her alive because he’s intrigued by her but she doesn’t believe it. He also wants all of her secrets before he’ll help her. He ends up finding out about her dad and they also ended sleeping together. When they get to skulls row, he uses her as a “pet” so the warlords don’t expect anything and tries to hide who her parentage is even though they’ve seen the tattoo. Book ends w

This was good and had a lot of my favorite tropes.
It was a nice, spicy, and intriguing read!

I actually enjoyed this book. It maybe was a little slow in places, but I think that helps with character development sometimes. It can get a little repetitive, but it wasn’t too much. I don’t feel either main character was unbalanced either. Looking forward to the next one. Both voice actors did a great job.

"To all the readers who want an MMC that will absolutely burn the world down for her."
The above is the dedication Charlotte Mallory writes at the beginning of her book, The Secrets of Jane: Forgotten, and what a perfect way to hint to readers what we're getting into! I gotta say that Soren Latham is my new favorite book boyfriend. He is depraved in the best sense of the word and ruthless when it comes to protecting the ones he loves. I love that Soren has empath abilities as well. Empathy is an ability I don't often see in Romantasy/Fantasy Romance books. It is refreshing to see it in a main character, especially a male main character. The way Soren can read Jane's emotions/feelings and respond with just the right action/behavior made me swoon!
I like the FMC, Jane, as well. She has this lost identity thing going on. She's a badass. She can fight. She won't let anyone intimidate her. She's fearlessly protective of the ones she loves. And she has healing abilities. Her background is a mystery. As I read through the book, details about her upbringing slowly become unearthed. Discovering her origins was a main motivator for me to keep turning the page.
The banter between Jane and Soren is GOLD! It really makes the book special. I like their relationship dynamics and how he uses his empathy to help Jane heal from the past. What a sweet mercenary!
I think Charlotte Mallory did a wonderful job with the pacing of her book. I didn't think it was too slow or too fast. It was perfect! I didn't find myself getting bored or getting lost with world building. The last 20 percent of the book is especially exciting! Speaking of world building, Charlotte Mallory also does this well in her book. We jump in to the action and get the details about the world as we follow the plot.
The book ends in a cliff hanger, but it's a good one! I can't wait to read book 2, The Secrets of Jane: Reborn. I hear it comes out in March 2025. I only have to wait a few more months! Yay! I applied for an eARC of Reborn, crossing my fingers I get accepted!
If you enjoy a rough MMC who is actually a cinnamon roll on the inside, pirates, mercenaries, discovering lost identities, a little depravity, and some spicy scenes, you will enjoy The Secrets of Jane: Forgotten.
Happy reading friends!

Dark romantic fantasy with a strong bada$$ FMC who can stand her ground against the morally gray MMC?! Yes. Please!
Jane and Soren are absolute goals. Their banter is top tier. And the freaking plot twists?!? Uugghhh!!
I need book 2, STAT!

The writing was off putting, it reads kind of like fan fiction and the characters seem like really immature caricatures
