I’m so happy I finally gave up on this book. Christie said it’s one of the greats, so I really tried, but it’s just dumb. Though the queens of crime’s women are not necessarily progressive portraits, they are rarely one note. 50% in, I’m consigning this to the main (and essentially only) woman’s fainting couch.

"Strange, nearly all of us, I venture to think, move unconsciously among a network opinions, often quite erroneous, which other people entertain about us."

So the first third just draaaaaaaged. Eventually I gave up and found an audio version in Librivox (audiobooks of stuff in the public domain) and listened to the rest of the book on that. The plot got better, but not a lot to go on with the characters. Why was he so well regarded?
