(Audiobook) I loved this book! To call it a  “romp” diminishes it; there’s depth and substance along with the international cloak and daggering. While nursing a sprained ankle, Russell stays at Damian’s home in France while Holmes investigates a break-in at the house. Russell finds a journal written in code, written by a young girl who was taken from Paris to India by her father. As Russell decodes and reads, she uncovers  Holmes family secrets—which reveal much about why Sherlock Holmes is who he is. I loved the previous narrator of LRK’s books, Jenny Sterlin, but this new narrator, Amy Scanlon, does a great job with Russell and especially with Damian’s American-French accent.

This is full of Holmes history, and gives us very little of Mary. It's a fascinating story of heritage for Holmes, but I do wish it had included more action or dialogue from Mary. This is the most recently published in the series as of my reading it, so I am sad to be caught up. This is the only book in the series not narrated by Jenny Sterlin on audio, so I missed her voice.

I haven’t picked up a book in this series for years, but I decided to try this one and found it very compelling! There are a few developments that have taken place since the early days of the series, but nothing that’s not at least briefly explained. So although it’s not at all meant to be a stand-alone, it can feasibly be read that way.
The blend of mystery and personal history in this installment made for a riveting read. Sherlock Holmes fans can expect a smattering of Irene Adler reminiscence and a certain amount of family revelation, all underpinned by scenes in 1920s France where Mary Russell whiles away her time with a sprained ankle by code-breaking and translating a mysterious journal.
