Classic science fiction of the finest sort. If nothing else, I would recommend reading this novel just for the necessary context that it provides to the Stanley Kubrick movie that shares it's name. For anyone who has watched the movie and have found themselves confused by many parts of the story due, in no large part, to the way Kubrick told his story, I would definitely suggest giving this book a ready, as it goes a long way towards alleviating a lot of that confusion

There were a lot of long descriptions that only really held my interest because I was listening to an audiobook instead of reading the actual words.
The narrator was fantastic however, and he made the experience better.

Really enjoyed this one. Felt it really lended itself to the more descriptive language of a novel. Will probably read a sequel.

My inkling is that this book does not age well. The novel was written in 1968, in conjunction with the Stanley Kubrik film of the same title--as the foreword to the 1999 edition says, Clarke and Kubrik were trying to write "the proverbial 'good science fiction movie,'" and the screenplay seemed more like a full book, so Clarke kept writing.

It was a time when the humanity was just about to reach the moon--debatably the most optimistic and exciting time in the history of space travel. "A Space Odyssey" of the type the occurs in this novel seemed like the next exciting step for humankind in reality, too. So given the relatively lackluster progress of the U.S. and global space programs in the decades since writing, I got a little depressed reading the speculations in this book.

But is it a good book? Well, I'd say it's a book for dreamers. The plot points are few and far between, so don't go into this one looking for fast-paced action. Instead, enjoy a leisurely read and muse about what the future still might bring: human exploration of the solar system (and beyond). Worth checking out if that sounds like your sort of thing, but I'm sad to say, I think this classic is eminently skippable.

I prefer the movie due to its ambiguity. I think a less concrete and more visual telling of the story allowed for more of my own thoughts and speculations to arise, and validified every one of them at once, to an extent. This book is great though, and I'd say if you're into science fiction you have to give it a go.
