I really tried to get into this one, on the surface it ticks every box I want from a story but I just really struggled. At about half way through I don't think I can finish up. I may or may not come back to this one at a later time but I'm not sure. Maybe it would read better in print? Separate the narrations better?

Absolutely LOVED how messy and toxic the relations of the characters on the mongolian side of this conflict were. Ouyang, Esen and Baoxiang make up a beautiful, radioactive trainwreck together that I just couldn't look away from. I found them really interesting.
However! The intrigue in this book just didn't cut it for me. Supposedly cunning murder schemes that seemed very unrealistic kept miraculously succeeding on first try. The main characters are excellent, but the plot can get a bit silly.

It just felt like such a slog. There was a lo I enjoyed but I just don’t think now is the time for me to finish this book. I also have 0% interest in war novels.
