I finished this book 5 minutes ago and my head is just too all over the place to write my thoughts down yet , let's save them for when I can think clearly again after all of that.

An hour in and the mc has been through multiple traumatic situations and not one emotion has been described.  They are at the school & finally some kind of internal state is shared - tired and overwhelmed (because of all they have to learn). For me, if things happen to characters, there need to be character reactions that bring those characters to life. Maybe this happens later but not soon enough for me to keep going considering how long this is. If events don’t impact characters and their development then why do any of these events or plots matter?

“Desire is the cause of all suffering. All Zhu had ever desired was to live. Now she felt the pure strength of that desire inside her, as inseparable as her breath or qi, and knew she would suffer from it. She couldn’t even begin to imagine the awful magnitude of the suffering that would be required to achieve greatness in the chaotic, violent world outside.”

I would like to say… Zhu is kind of trifling. She’s no better than the others, ambitious, egotistical, self centred. However her relationship with femininity and suppressing herself was a very interesting storyline.

Kind of dragged on a bit with Esen and the General, I found the Zhang plot confusing.

I think this is a fast paced book I will enjoyed reading it, it deffo got me out of my reading slump :)
