This was enjoyably dishy (haha, do you see what I did there?). Bourdain may be a major bullshit artist, but for the most part, it’s highly entertaining bullshit, so I don’t really care. I did think the book really lost focus at the end and goes on quite a bit too long, but overall I found this to be an interesting read about a fascinating industry.

Perhaps i’m blinded by my love for Bourdain as a person and my sadness at his passing, but nonetheless this book is one of my favorites that i read in 2024. The audiobook on spotify is narrated by the man himself, and to me that is the superior way to read this book. As they often say about Shakespeare, this book is unbelievably good in spite of all the people that say it’s unbelievably good.

Unsurprisingly, Bourdain's written voice is just as snarky as his television persona (probably because they're the same, herp derp. I should not be writing reviews when low on sleep). When I was reading this, coworkers wondered if I was interested in cooking/becoming a chef. Nope, not really- I just enjoy reading clever snark, though this was an informative peek behind the kitchen doors. The restaurant business is probably less drug-riddled than his earlier days, but the mad weekend rush is probably still a Thing.
There's also the irony in lambasting celebrity chefs while becoming one because of this book, but based on Bourdain's AMA I don't think he's changed too much in the transition.
