“How does my mom do it, every time? She’ll find me in pieces, and somehow, some way, she manages to put me back together.” (p. 187)

I needed a fast, page-turner book to get me back into my reading kick and this book did just that. It was an easy and amusing read (which is silly considering it was a murder mystery), but is still able to brush on the experience of a daughter of immigrants and include a sprinkle of romance. I do wish that the book dove deeper into the relationships between Meddy, her mom, and her aunts because there’s so much that could be uncovered, especially regarding intergenerational conflict and trauma. I love the how the author made the women the strength of this book. Each character had their own story to why they are the way that they are and left me craving more.

The aunties praise Meddy for being such a good daughter and for being so polite and smart while they're literally hiding a dead body. Then they criticize and get mad at her - not for murder or anything - but because she touched the dead body. What a fantastic family.

I don't know why I was expecting the plot to focus less on the murder, and more on the romance, but even though I was surprised by this, I still had a great time reading this book. As over-the-top as the whole story was, I was so invested in how Meddy and the Aunties were going to pull off this cover up!! And then when Nathan showed back up?? Like things couldn't get any more stressful for Meddy at this wedding! All the while I could hear the Aunties bickering with each other, admonishing Meddy when she was curt with someone and telling her to "be more respectful" like they weren't all at their wit's end carting around a dead body all weekend!! I know it was in the process of being turned into a Netflix movie, and I can't find anything about a premiere date, but I really hope it's still happening! I could 100% envision the whole film!

Dial A for Aunties is so funny, and I liked it. It was entertaining, and the writing was easy to follow. The descriptions were vivid enough to feel like I was there with Meddy and her aunts. The characters were written well, and I felt like I could relate to the family dynamic. Finally, the plot twists were insane and just kept on coming. The only downside was that I felt like everything was rushed, and the ending felt a bit incomplete, but I hope it gets fully resolved in the second book.

This book isn’t something you should take super seriously. It’s just pure chaos with a sprinkle of culture.

Adult Meddy is someone I came to love. She tried her hardest to really start to stand up for herself and as a daughter in a Chinese family, I related a lot to her thoughts as an adult and the pressure of staying within the family and always pleasing her parents.

The aunties were an over-exaggerated caricature. For me, they were a bit too overdone but they made me laugh with all the incredulity I felt with their actions.

This book is just pure laughter, confusion, incredulity, and unhinged chaos all in one. Read if you’re looking to just get away from life. (and btw, don’t take anything too seriously)
