Typical Trollope - characters exist in an upper class other worldly world!

3.5 I read this years and years ago, and didn't remember it at all, but the fact that I've kept it all this time tells me that I liked it, so I gave it a reread. And I did enjoy it. Not perfect, but it made me laugh several times and I thought the characters were well drawn....I even liked the awful ones.

The author makes characters of all ages and temperaments come to life, and whether or not I liked them or agreed with their choices, I felt for them and wanted them to be happy. The story seems a little dated now, but so do I, so that’s all right.

I found this on my mother’s bookshelf, always a great source. This novel is so well written, with compelling characters whose relationships evolve surprisingly, authentically—with humor, grace, and empathy in the narrative point of view. Absorbing and well worth my time.

Veddy British. Good characters, all with rich inner emotional lives. Two thumbs way up. Only complaint: the non-ending that does not wrap up loose ends, but leaves them - and one character in particular - hanging. It's *too* major - I hate that.

Incredibly boring. The only redeeming feature of this novel is that the author has a nice writing style, but all the characters are so boring and unlikable. The only one I actually liked was Helen or the cook at Kate's job. Other than that everyone is boring, no one has character growth and keeps on making the same mistakes without any actual thing to be learned by the dull ending.

I enjoyed this book but the ending was a bit of a let down I thought and I didn't really warm to the characters . I always seem to enjoy the read with Joanna Trollope though
