The cutest romance book I've read in a long time. Harper was so endearing and real. Dan was so sweet and kind. Perfect.

Thanks to Goodreads and the publisher for sending me this great book

The meet cute for this book was so adorable and began an instant attraction between Harper and Dan. Harper is a Type A person who experiences a lot of anxiety about being the best. She is so close to graduating and will then figure out when she will do her residency so she has no time for a relationship. She isn't even sure where she will end up living.

Dan is a first year student, and is struggling to pass his classes. He is really only doing it out of family duty. After his father passed his mother tells him she is struggling to hold onto the family dental practice and he needs to step up and help save the business. He doesn't have the passion for it that he sees in Harper causing him a lot of stress. His attraction to Harper is so sweet and he is so patient with her attempts to push him away, and is just so steady in his conviction that they are supposed to be together.

While I loved the beginning part of the book, the middle is where it started to lose me. It had a lot of back and forth of will they won't they that I started to get bored by it. The ending did end up picking up and it really made me start to tear up. If you are a lover of slow burn, will they won't they stories this is the book for you.

I received a free copy from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own and given freely.

Probably the romance novel I liked the most so far this year. The story of Dan and Harper is very cute and relatable as a student.

I absolutely and completely adored this story. I love the characters, I love the romance, I loved the story - I just loved it all. I didn't have a favorite dentistry based romance before (and this isn't a deep sub-genre), but now I definitely do - Not only that, this is one of my favorite romances of the year.

I would rate it higher but Harper's emotional push and pull made me want to flip a table so...yeah. I did enjoy most of the book it was cute and i enjoyed the process of them going from friends to lovers but that last fight in the hospital was insane!!

TROPES:
-M/F
-Dental students
-Multicultural couple
-Golden retriever MC
-They go on dates
-We're just friends. Yeah right...

CW: grief, toxic parent, toxic parent expectations, death of parent(car crash), anxiety attack on page, internalized ableism, claustrophobia

2/5 pulled teeth.

Idk how to review this without spoilers, so warning: there are spoilers.

Once again, I listened to this via audiobook and hated the voices, so that may be the reason I disliked it so much. BUT I didn’t dislike it until the second half. Harper is in dental school, her mom died in a car accident, and she’s an anxious mess — valid. Girl meets boy and it’s literally like love at first sight — *eye roll* but it’s a romance, I’ll allow it. Girl and boy very clearly like each other, but girl literally does everything she can to avoid dealing with her feelings because she’s moving after she graduates, as if this guy who is completely obsessed with her wouldn’t do everything he could to keep them together long distance. She tortures herself with it to the point where she’s borderline abusive to him just to keep him away because she has no self control????????

Girl, get OVER yourself.

If this were high school, college, YA characters, I might let this plot slide, but they’re 26, and the choices they make are way too dramatic for 26. I’m ANNOYED. Harper went around in circles about her feelings and her decisions and her inner monologues started making me dizzy. Like okay yes we get it, you’re an overachiever dealing with anxiety and grief. Got to therapy, maybe? But she had a bad experience when she was 12 so she never wants to go again… but she’s a dental student, she’s smart enough to know better! I wanna cut her some slack, but I simply cannot.

The WORST part is that she doesn’t becomes lowkey emotionally abusive to Dan (other MC and love interest) until AFTER they finally sleep together after so much sexual tension. It’s a slow burn but did NOT satisfy. She’s full of bliss and suddenly she’s screaming at him because she’s distracted. She’s obsessed with him and then she’s pissed because she forgot she had a test. BABY, THAT’S ON YOU. Heard of google cal? Maybe use it! The reminders app on your phone is FREE. For someone written as so meticulously organized, the “conflict” of her being forgetful and stressed about school simply doesn’t track. And THEN, her professor was UNDERSTANDING, so she should be relieved? But no, she passes out and end up in the ED. And when Dan tries to help her, she’s pissed? Of course I didn’t expect everything to be perfect once they were together, but the fact that she feels just as much as him but blames him for distracting her? She’s literally blaming HIM for HER feelings! And the fact that he stayed so long while she played these games? Nuh uh, honey.

Then they both spend months feeling MISERABLE because neither of them is mature enough to pick up the phone and be honest about their feelings. Like, seriously? I’m not buying it.

And the writing, while it was fine, got monotonous at times. If I hear the word “chest” or “anxiety” one more time… and I know it’s a book about an anxious MC but STILL. All the descriptions of how they felt, when they talked it when they touched…visceral, but not in a good way. Like, a little cringe imo. Idk, maybe I’m being s little unfair but these are my thoughts! Am I alone here?

Clearly this story wasn’t for me.

I would give this a 2.5/5. It was fine as a whole but these people are meant to be in their mid twenties and it felt like they were in high school which I found super jarring. Harper's attitude is just bad, she's mean and her lashing out was really hard to read. Despite this I appreciated the anxiety representation and thought it was handled pretty well!
