This seems to be a well researched look into the inner workings of FB and why it fails so badly at being humane. What exactly are the goals of an individual or a company that already has revenues and profits of billions of dollars? Continued growth? For what? Billy Gates came late to the philanthropy world. Sandburg and Zuck are not even conversant with it.
I'm not currently organizing any government insurrections, so I'm not too worried about the personal data collection. I understand the FB goal of sending me info about things that will probably interest me, while not sending me fascist, racist, insurrectionist shit from scared old white men. FB's lack of insight into how their manipulation of page posts, it the most disturbing aspect of the book. FB does not need to be an arbiter of the First Amendment. They are a private company. If they are going to facilitate a particular political viewpoint, they should be honest about it. Users who do not share those viewpoints can/should move to another platform.
FB, despite all their high powered programmers, has failed to produce programs that detect and block manipulated video. When they finally detect those videos, they choose to do nothing about them. Losing a few funny memes would be a small loss, compared to the damage we know those videos have done.
Time to break up FB.

really amazing and well done book, the time frame it focuses on is really well developed and a lot of amazing insight is here, especially about sheryl sandberg & mark zuckerbeg's partnership and the way they've reacted to the challenges facing facebook now

This was an informative and glaring dive into how deeply toxic and mismanaged Facebook is. I appreciated how the authors detailed and explored dozens of examples of the systemic issues that started the minute “Facesmash” was released online right up to January 6th. It’s a timely read for right now. My only critique of the book is that they bounced all around between different years and it was hard to keep track of where we were in FB’s considerable fuck ups. But that doesn’t take away from the reporting or the book at all. Still a must read, and I recommend it to anyone interested and invested in tech.

Kang and Frenkel excel in framing this longform journalism in the context of the mid-to-late aughts and the 2016 election. It would be too easy to say that this is all information we knew, that Facebook is evil, etc. The truth is deeper, more insidious, as ugly as promised. This is as much a thorough indictment of Facebook as it is our antiquated antitrust laws and effective gerontocracy.
My main critique would be the treatment of others responsible for Facebook's atrocities, aside from Zuckerberg and Sandberg. It is clear that the pair don't stand on solid ground. The many secondary and tertiary people hold some responsibility and get off fairly easy in this book, sounding almost like heroes.
In reflecting on Isabel Allende's Soul of a Woman in conjunction with An Ugly Truth, it is clear that women alone are not the saviors of our society, that we need to push beyond European heteronormative standards of success.
