 I really enjoyed this book! Can’t wait to finish the series. Amari and Zelie are fierce!I love the world building and the different maji clans. It was beautifully written and easy to read.
Spoilers:::::
 I would’ve love to see Inan use his power for good and come into his own as a maji. I didn’t trust him, but I was rooting for him to choose to be on the right side of the fight. Zu’s death was tragic and she and her people deserved so much more. Zelie is young and made some of the wrong choices throughout the book. But, I understood her reasonings and emotions behind them. So I don’t despise her for how it ended. I do wish she’d listen to Tzain and Amari regarding Inan.

So this book kind of reminded me of Candide... the characters constantly went from one ridiculously horrible scenario to the next and I think a lot of those plot points were taken directly from other books (Harry Potter and the Hunger Games come to mind). But while I thought the plot wasn't that original, the writing style was great, and overall I thought it was a fantastic debut, which is why I rounded up my rating.

nothing special really
the interesting concept and amazing worldbuilding balances out the annoying characters and childlike writing
