It was a reread after 3 years and i can say that the plot and the story was more exciting than i remember but in those 3 years i read many good books with incredible characters and in this book i wanted the characters to just shut up. Characters who i really loved werent extremely important and had only a few scenes, when the main ones were making me wanna scream. I may not like the characters too much but i have to acknowledge how amazing the plot and worldbuilding were. I just couldnt put it down. Its a good story. 3.75☆

i read this physically and with the audiobook and it was amazing. i really don’t know what to rate this one. it’s either a 4.5 or a 5. i loved the magic system a lot and i love the characters especially zélie and amari. don’t even get me started on inan. i don’t know what’s keeping me from rating is 5 stars. on one hand if i think of fantasies i have rated 5 stars, i don’t think it is a 5 then. but also should i compare different books together? also i have a bit of a problem with inan’s character and how he was handled. and on the other hand if you think about it for what it is, a debut YA fantasy novel then it deserves 5 stars. i don’t know i hate having to rate books, trying to fit whole worlds onto a 1-5 rating scale (i’m so close to not rating books at all). the ending and the author’s note made me sob. i’m picking the second book now !!

I truly enjoyed the world building and characters in this book. The journey of the characters is intriguing and the reveals happen all at the right time.

As a Black woman, I wanted to read only Black authors during Black History Month. While this book is incredibly well written, and the world already seems so lush and beautiful, I was not ready for the slavery, colorism, racism, child abuse and sexual assault. I read enough of these kinds of stories growing up and thought this was going to be a little bit more joyful. I understand that setting the tone is probably important for showing off just how victorious the characters are going to be in the end, but I just wasn’t ready to encounter all of those triggers within the first two chapters. I own a physical copy and will revisit it again someday.
