What a refreshing fantasy read. Inspired by African culture and mythology, the setting feels like a breath of fresh air from what I'm used to reading in this genre. This book was a real page turner for me. 

Zelie as a young child witnessed the day when magic was killed from the land, alongside those who wielded it. Her mother being one of those people who was brutally killed during the event referred to as The Raid. Society treats her people called diviners, who are easily identified by their white hair as second class citizens, often referred to as maggots. This is a story about Zelie and company try to bring magic back to the world. In the hopes of proving her people who are discriminated, abused, and exploited a chance to stand up for themselves. I enjoyed the exploration of the themes of discrimination, social inequality, family trauma, and community. I definitely look forward to continuing this series.

Despite it sometimes being trope-y and predictable and having a romance that felt forced/unnecessary, I really enjoyed the heart of this book and the worldbuilding.

Slow to get started but after the first half I couldn’t put it down. I think the magic system could have been developed further as it wasn’t well explained but it was great as a debut! I also agree with criticisms that the romance felt forced and simplistic. I’m looking forward to the sequel.
