Synopsis
When Marra is 15 her sister is married to the Prince of the Northern Kingdom and Marra is sent to a convent. Marra's life at the convent is peaceful and allows her to indulge her interests in fiber arts, while ignoring politics and the requirements of being a princess. When Marra is 30, her niece dies and Marra visiting for the funeral learns that her sister is being abused by Prince Vorling. Knowing that there is nothing she can do directly that won't start a war between kingdoms, Marra turns to the dust-wife. She is given three impossible tasks and then the dust-wife will give her the tools to kill a prince.

Review
Marra, as a woman in her 30s who is not quick witted, does not find everything easy, and loves fiber crafts, was a wonderful character to follow. I loved seeing a main character in a fantasy who wasn't "just so itty bitty" and "shockingly good" at everything she tried. Marra is kind and accepting of people, while being stubborn and determined. She realizes that as a woman she has very little power in her world, but rather than the standard "we have to change everything" she uses this fact to get what she needs done.

The older women in the story, Agnes and the dust-wife, are also portrayed as capable women who both bring different things to the table. I really enjoyed seeing two different types of older women, both who love chickens - because who doesn't - that each get shit done in their own way.

Fenris, as the sole male main character, doesn't immediately show up and take over. He's willing to take instruction and help where needed, which was refreshing. We don't need all men to be controlling freaks to make a feminist point!

The pets
One of the best parts of this book was the demon chicken. I absolutely loved her and Bonedog is baby.

This is a beautifully written book. The imagery was the best part and made it a perfect autumn read. It was spooky but in a fantastical, witchy way that I was not expecting. It did drag at times, but the poetry that is this book made it worth it.

this was a cute book.
the only real issue i had with it was the tone shift with it starting out quite grimly with lots of gory elements and then becoming a sort of lets go on an adventure with a bunch of people who dont seem to be who youd pick for that adventure. however i enjoyed it thoroughly especially the internal struggles of the mc and the topics that were discussed. all in all a great book.

I hate saying this because I do genuinely like T. Kingfisher and I know everyone adores this book, but it was a miss for me.

Despite having so many elements that I typically enjoy in a story—the found family, the endearing and quirky characters, the grown protagonists, the gentle romance element, the dark fairytale subject matter—I was struggling to push through the entire time I was reading. I’m not sure if it was just the slow pacing but I could not force myself at any point to be invested in what was going on.

I don’t think it was poorly written at all, I simply think it wasn’t for me.

This book was amazing, I haven't felt so lost in a story in ages. I truly cared about the characters and plot. The writing is immersive and a perfect blend of serious and light-hearted fun to keep you reading for hours on end. The story tells dark, deep hitting themes in a way that is respectful yet gripping way. Also Agnes is a sweetheart!

Dogs made of animated bones, dust wives, goblins, demonic chickens, fairy godmothers of questionable quality. It's about the inevitable darkness of being a woman and the hope they find in creating a community with each other. And Fenris is there.
