An endlessly fascinating take on 19th century America. Harriet Martineau, a radical feminist especially for her time, travels America during the Jackson years, when the country was not even yet fifty years old. Although a lot has changed, many things haven't. The country wasn't sure how to think about slavery (but they knew they found abolitionists annoying, much like people hate SJW's today), women lived wretched lives (but she of course saw the potential in their eventual rise), and religion played a peculiar and prominent role. I want to read more books like this, but the language can be very dry and dated. That being said, Martineau was quite the feminist hero at a time where few if any others existed, and we could definitely use more women like her today.
