I will be blunt: I am very rarely a fan of unplanned sequels written years (or decades) after the original book. But I read this because I felt like I had to, given that I have Offred's mantra of resistance found scratched into the wood by a previous Handmaid - nolite te bastardes carborundum - tattooed on my arm. And boy howdy am I glad I did. This in no way falls into the same traps that other unplanned sequels often suffer. It is faithful to the original tale yet tells a wholely new one, not only in story but to some extent in narrative style. Basically it's really, really good (obviously, since I'm giving it 5 stars) and in some ways a more mature story than Handmaid's Tale. I love both and I can 100% see myself returning to this again.

A befitting sequel to The Handmaid’s Tale, that answers so many unanswered questions about how Gilead state came to be, how did it become what it was, and what happened to Offred after she was arrested. Quite encouraging after the dark first instalment, and the character of Aunt Lydia was such a revelation. Though this book too gives you the jitters in parts. Quite impressive end to the series.
