That was a lot all at once! I've read this very quickly and I will have to read it again. I can't decide what I think about Aunt Lydia's presentation.

What a page-turner!!

Can we have a moment of thought for Becka/Aunt Immortel? The unspoken words and the feelings she had were felt throughout the entire book.

Also this part: “The precious bloodlines Genealogical Archives kept so meticulously by the senior Aunts, the Bible’s, the theological discourses, the dangerous works of world literature - all were behind that locked door. We would be granted acces only when our minds were sufficiently strengthened.”

Can’t imagine that some books are kept from me because my mind isn’t “sufficiently strengthened”…

I was very surprised about Aunt Lydia, really liked her part in this book and I was a little disappointed that Offred didn’t have anything to add to this book.

A brilliant follow on from the Handmaids Tale. Particularly appealing to me as a historian and archaeologist due to its focus on archival evidence and analysis of the past through archives.

I really enjoyed this book! There was a clear distinction between the different perspectives. Aunt Lydia’s perspective was the most interesting and the most controversial. I felt intrigued, disgusted and sympathetic all at the same time!! I felt incredibly sympathetic towards Agnes because I would argue her situation is the most tragic, having been a young girl raised in Gilead. Daisy’s perspective was incredibly enjoyable
and I thought that her shock after the death of her adoptive parents was portrayed very well!!
Also, she’s a funny character, very bold!! I also found Agnes to be very bold, but in a more discreet and, I would argue, dangerous way. This hidden strength is, of course, a result of being raised in Gilead - she cannot broadcast her strength in a land where women are displayed as weak decorative items. Aunt Lydia’s point of view was very intriguing. She is the most cunning of the three women, a master of manipulating situations to her favour - a skill that has proved essential for her survival in Gilead. The story itself was very good and I liked how the narratives evolved and linked together!! I thought the pace was consistent throughout the book, but I felt it quickened significantly towards the end…!
