it felt weird for me to rate something that actually happened, so this review will focus more on the author's storytelling.
things i did like:
- Slater brought out both sides of the story in a way that turned my originally set-in-stone into a mess. She showed readers each person's story, their environment, and just who they are as people and that made, not all but so much, of the difference.
- i liked Slater's writing style; i liked the little bits of verse thrown in, the way she described each involved person in a very creative and informative way.
things i didn't like:
- the story felt disjointed at times -- chapters would jump from topic to topic at seemingly random times, which can work if done very right, but in this case i think it was just too much, made it too complicated.
overall this is a really important story, and it didn't make me feel the way i thought it would. which is a good thing for me. The 57 Bus was an insightful read, and i think it's a book for everyone.
Moderate: Deadnaming
there was a lot a lot a lot of misgendering and deadnaming of Sasha throughout the book, which isn't the fault of the author, as the majority was done by police officers and the news, but i know this could be a TW for some people and made me personally feel pretty uncomfortable reading. (Dashka Slater does use deadnames for Sasha (and a few others) as well, but states in the beginning of the book that this was with the consent of all people in question.)emakay's review
