My first Le Guin! Like all short story compilations, this was a mixed bag. I really liked the concept and themes throughout.

My favorites:
"Sita Dulip's Method"
"The Silence of the Asonu"
"Seasons of the Ansarac"
"Great Joy"
"The Fliers of Gy"

I also liked:
"The Ire of the Veksi"
"Social Dreaming of the Frin"
"Islands of the Immortals"

The rest were either just ok or I ended up skipping them altogether.

Imaginative. At times poignant, and sad.

A solid tapestry of worlds mirroring our own with the usual social commentary you'd expect from the author carefully woven into it and going well beyond the whimsical writing. I'm a fan of "The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas" and I'm a fan of this book, though I think the former will haunt me more overall.

I feel I needed to read this as it seems controversial these days to speak against our current technological, capitalistic society.

Ursula doing her fantasy ethnography thing straight up and down. Each one has the classis Short Story Formula of setting up the situation, complicating it, doing a little Twist, and then resolving on an emotional beat. Some of these work way better than others. A few of them are among her best stuff (The Flyers of Gy), some of them feel more like Pratchettesque conceptual jokes (The Silence of the Asonu), some of them are not worth much at all, especially those which trend toward her California Liberal tendencies and real-world contemporary social commentary (The Royals of Hegn, ugh).

3.5 stars. Some stories I would love to read an entire book about, while others were a little forgettable. Still in love with Ursula's imagination though
