I'm curious about the structure of this book. The first story is slow, very familiar, and comes across as weirdly anti-science. I nearly stopped reading and decided that this author wasn't for me, but I decided to try the next story. Every story after that one is fantastic. Except for the last one. This is a book of some of the best writing I've ever read bookended by some pretty rubbish stuff. I loved all but those two. Coincidentally, the two unrelated stories about a race of bird people happen to be my two favourites.
