The book does a good job building a world that is genuinely interesting but doesn't feel too unique. Particularly when it delves into combat, it feels uninspired and pretty much entirely based on Dungeons and Dragons.

That plus the pacing, illogical choices and most importantly, the grotesque and sexual way Lev describes women in the first two chapters (or "books") of the book really can't get this rating higher.

I feel like if this was a draft and properly worked through with someone, it could easily be a 4+ with minor amendments...

A waste of 400 pages, beyond boring and terrible. Only finished so I could count it towards the reading challenge I’m so far behind on for the year.

The main character sucks so much, but I couldn’t help getting pulled into the world.

There is no better description for this book than "Harry Potter goes to college". Seriously. Take a Hogwarts-style school, make it a college (so the kids are older...lots of naughtyness) drop it in upstate New York, create a new kind of bad guy. That's "The Magicians."

Awesome book.

This was my 2nd go at this book and I enjoyed it more this time. You have to let go of the "This is an adult version of Harry Potter" and just enjoy the book on its own merits. Also, if you are a musician, especially a cello player (or in my case a cello player's parent), you will enjoy all of the allusions to cello playing. If you are literary nerd, you will enjoy all the literary allusions.

The main character is annoying and a little too perfect and nonchalant. And the dude who ordered all the glasses of water, what is your problem?
