a riveting collection of short stories by Denis Johnson. They are incredibly real, and gritty and dirty.

“Much later I told her that I’d actually gotten a vasectomy a long time ago, and somebody else must have made her pregnant. I also told her once that I had inoperable cancer and would soon be passed away and gone, eternally. But nothing I could think up, no matter how dramatic or completely horrible, ever made her repent or love me the way she had at first, before she really knew me.”

sparse hypnotic haunting and striking like the desolate parts of the country or the parts of town that used to be factories. authentic prose never overwritten but verging on poetry, the ramblings of one who sees through the veil and finds both sides equally mundane. episodes of awful deeds and nasty characters treated not with apathy but nevertheless without judgment - judgment the narrator reserves for himself. I could go on - but really my only complaint is how fast it all goes by.

Raymond Carver’s characters literally on heroin (a bit reductive, I know).
