3.72 AVERAGE

Overall, I would give this book a 4.3 out of five stars. I would say it quite hit a 4.5, but it was close. Meaning that I did enjoy the book, and I will 100% be getting the next book. Though, I would have to either way, as the ending for this book is left very, very open, making it obviously incomplete without book two.

Small spoilers ahead.

I enjoyed this book almost solely because I enjoyed Jude's and Kiara's relationship ship, which is probably why the ending was one of the few things I could say I didn't enjoy about it. Obviously, it left the whole love thing open, ending with Jude leaving to find a way to save her. Deep down, I had hoped they were both gods since it was obvious, at the very least, that one of them was. But book one ends on the knowledge that gods can be created, so here is to hopping. As an author myself who has a passion for creating gods, this is pretty much up my alley. XD

The only downfall to this story is that it sometimes feels overly slow towards the end. I would say after the final knight's death is about where it seems a bit draggy. (Jude's friend, his name is slipping my mind right now.) The details seem to feel sluggish and overwhelming, if not a bit repetitive. But if that is the only fault I found with this read, I would say it's not that bad.

Overall, I would recommend the book to anyone who likes a nice, angsty, at first Fatnasy romance with a scarred hot ML and a Female lead who is a badass more so than the male. Kiara kicks ass the whole book.

I really loved the setup of this book. The creepy forest, there being no sun, the mist, all of it set up a creepy atmosphere and was really interesting. I liked the relationships between Kiara and her friends and brother. I would have liked more information on the magic but love that the powers are tied to the sun goddess. It was really interesting and I’m excited for book two.

This one definitely takes the cake for just the right amount of backdrop setting. Jude Maddox's grim duty as the Hand of Death takes readers on a journey into a realm of nightmares and impending doom. Amidst the shadows, he encounters Kiara Frey, a fierce and defiant woman who challenges his perception of life and love.

The narrative weaves a treacherous tale where survival and desire intertwine, creating a seductive dance as captivating as the shadow beasts themselves.

The story unfolds with an ominous beauty, betraying senses and surpassing nightmares. In their fight against darkness, the characters must embrace the very shadows they fear, knowing that most of them will meet their demise. A compelling blend of romance and darkness, immerses readers in a world where love and treachery intertwine.

DID NOT FINISH: 49%

Man I am so disappointed. I just DNF’d this book. I tried so hard to enjoy it and I just could not for the life of me. I love the first 100 pages. Then the next 100 it was like wading through mud and I could not convince myself it was worth the time for me to finish it. I liked the concept. I enjoyed the characters all up until they went into the mists and then the fmc just got insufferable for me. I’m disappointed that I didn’t enjoy it more cause even with the minimal world building that there is I think it could have been built out into something even better. Especially knowing there is a book 2

Really loving this dark world build and strange magic! While there were def some predictable pieces, I really love how this one shaked out! Not bad at all for picking a random book off of Libby! Now to wait for the second one.
