I enjoyed the writing style of this one and the world, plot and concept were really intriguing to me - the characters and the romance did let this down a little and overall I feel it was a little insta lovey and the “found family” was quite random. This was however entertaining and I would recommend giving it a try!

I went into this blindly, and was immediately hooked from the beginning. This definitely was a five star read for me, especially since I stayed up til 3am reading “just one more chapter”. The ending left me unwell and I need book 2 asap!!

The water was ice cold as she dipped her toe into the current. She could hear the beast downstream and the screams of someone struggling. The darkness of the night obscured her vision, but she was determined to prove herself strong, no matter what obstacles got in her way.
To Kill a Shadow is a YA fantasy following Kiara (Ki), who is selected as a recruit for the famous Knights. We also follow Jude, who is the commander. The kingdom is cursed by a mist that is slowly killing everyone and they must stop it.
I wanted to love this book because the premise sounded so good. A fantasy with dark elements and an enemies to lovers plot? Sign me up! But it fell so flat and I was very disappointed. The character development was lacking, the world-building was minimal and led to a lot of confusion, the insta-lust between the main characters made me not interested in their relationship, and the found family aspect felt very forced. Nothing came together well for me in this one, which is sad because it has so much potential. I was not a fan.

I'm so sorry, but there was nothing I liked about this. I made a literal list of all the things (and their pages) of what I didn't like. I won't gove as detailed a list here, but know it exists.
- They're obsessed with each other after a 10 sentence conversation.
- Hunour is very Wattpad coded with a quitky side character.
- Jude is so fucking emo.
- There is no tension between the characters. They're either flirting or fighting and there's no feeling to it.
**Stopped at Ch 15 / pg 98.**
Dnf this book:
- No chemistry between characters.
- Insta-love
- FMC tried to convince the audience that she was BAMF, when she was a total pick me
- MMC was Edward Cullen-esque, whining that he's so bad and should stay away from FMC and praising FMC's kindness and goodness to the heavens ( i don't where he get that from, certainly not from her actions)
- Found family aspect is so shallow, you could throw it away and it wouldn't change a thing
- Almost no world building; in 250 pages i barley know anything about the world and how anything there functions
I'm so dissapointed because from the discription it sounded like an adult romanse with intresting world to immers in, however I got bland story with irritating characters.
It was a slog to get through, a true chore and it pisses me off because i spent a pretty penny to get that book in first edition with sprayed edges.
