This book is very ~meh~. I read the description and got through the first 75-100 pages thinking that I was going to really like it only to be extremely let down with the remaining 75% of the book. The world building was lacking, filled with holes, and just super confusing. The characters seemed awesome at first but slowly grew to be more infuriating with no real motivations or personality once you get past their one (1) personality trait they each have. The pacing was the one thing I would say that works as it kept me invested in the book enough for me to not dnf it. The book in all is very cookie cutter to for the YA genre with no real unique aspects and just very plain.

I knew nothing about this book so my expectations for it were next to nothing. Once I made it past the first few chapters (that felt a little clunky flow-wise) I absolutely DEVOURED it.
This is the first book of a YA dark fantasy series, and I think this is best YA story that I’ve read in a very long time. I won’t go into a whole lot of detail because the story is littered with crumbs that lead to some pretty interesting twists. I’m hooked! Cant wait to see where this story goes after that ending. :*)

To Kill a Shadow worked well for me, and I found it to be quite entertaining. My attention was held from start to finish. The story read quickly. It did take me a bit to get into an agreeable reading rhythm. There was a twist that I wasn't expecting. There were familiar tropes. The magic system was on the softer side. Overall, To Kill a Shadow was very well written, and I do want to continue the series if there were to be another installment. I would recommend To Kill a Shadow to readers who enjoy dark fantasy with romantic tension.

This book might actually be my favorite of the year. My jaw was on the floor the ENTIRE time. This was so fast paced and thrilling that this 400 page book feel like a 200 page read time. I literally felt like a vacuum eating this book up.
