This book reads like an introductory novella, which is both good and bad. On the bright side, it spent a good amount of time introducing the world and the unique magical system and how the characters’ respective people interact with those and each other. On the other hand, I feel like that was in detriment to the story itself.

Berne and Sirin’s story feels squashed into the last half of the book and comes off as rushed and instalovey. (Another thing that made it feel more like a novella than a full length book. And, to be fair, the length is right between the two.)

That said, it’s still a cute story and absolutely worth the time to read it.

The worldbuilding is fantastic and I am very much looking forward to reading the other books in this universe.

Fair warning, because despite the author’s note, I was not prepared. The intro to the book mentions “shifted sex” and, bro, the author means it. It’s not till the very end of the book, but this dude is a full on bear. So. That’s a thing I’ve read now that can never be unread.

If you're a fan of the steminist novels, you'll love this smart, determined main female character! My only disappointment was that it didn't keep going and I'm excited for the future novellas in this series! The world building is so fun, especially with the footnotes that stay in world so they reference papers that exist or clarify things for a reader in the future who may not have the same context. So so fun!
