This is the second in a series but I read it as a stand alone. There was enough background provided so I wasn't terribly lost. In all honesty, I really enjoyed the book until the last 50 or so pages. For me it dragged, and perhaps because I did not read the first book I didn't understand the need for the relationship changes. I think my students that like historical-fic will enjoy this if I expose them to it.
