It's a critique of the state of Soviet society told through satirical lenses with some biblical allusions. Weirdly, I really enjoyed it.

Also vaguely amusing and political. Shoutout Bulgakov

Okay now I think it’s safe to say that Bulgakov is one of my favourite authors. I’ve loved everything of his that I’ve read. His background in medicine and (as the commentary at the end puts it) the themes of “fantasy rooted in everyday life” that he’s so good at just make him a perfect author to me. (Though I also loved his autobiography – it may even be my favourite). This particular book was funny, at times infuriating and also thought-provoking with it’s criticism of eugenics and ,as he puts it, the results of not advancing parallel to nature and instead forcing a question. Very fun book.

This was a very interesting book, I find Soviet-era Russia to be a really interesting topic and the fact that this book was a parody on it was very unique. There were a couple of times I didn’t quite know what was going on but overall it was a pretty short, and well written read

ok russian poor things! no but seriously i actually really loved this. master and margarita being my favorite book literally ever i already knew the satire and comedy was going to be perfect. i didn’t necessarily understand every nuance of the political satire (i didn’t love the translation either so that might not have helped), but i also think there is enough context clues to see the absurdity in its premise and ideas: schvonder's self-importance, the populace's fascination and then distaste of modern science, sharikov parroting political buzzwords to manipulate his surroundings, etc.
