Love love love this but HATED the ending but mostly because I don’t like what’s happening for those people, not because the ending was actually bad. I have a full TBR so I don’t think I’ll read the rest of the series just yet but it is on my to buy list!

Following four women who grew up together in Her Majesty’s Royal Coven this book is a great look at gender and identity in a fantasy setting. Loved the world building in this book and how it integrated the coven and witches into our current world. The characters were my favourite aspect of this book, each person was well fully formed with flaws.

This book isn’t my normal genre, but I did enjoy reading it! It is a series and I do tend to struggle with those because I hate not really getting the ending. I know that’s the whole point of a series, but after reading hundreds of pages I always am ready to know the end. I did feel like the author beautifully incorporated a lot of today’s issues of gender, equality, feminism, and queer identity. If fantasy is something you typically enjoy reading, I would definitely recommend this book and most likely the series (about to start book 2 now)!

4.5 Stars. Love a book that has you so invested that you are RAGING at some of the characters. It took me a couple chapters to really get into the story, since I felt very dropped in and disorientated at the start, however, once I clicked in I could not put the book down. The relationships between the characters was so well fleshed out, and I felt I understood each narrators motives. The bulk of the book is exploring these relationships and different characters opinions on incredibly important social issues, which I really enjoyed reading. I appreciated that all of the characters had some good and some bad traits, however, I do think that Dawson was quite heavy handed in telling the reader who was a good guy and who was a bad one. The foreshadowing was done so well, and I appreciated the creepy tone of the dreams and prophecies which we are shown. I still don’t fully understand how the magic system works, so I think this could have been explored more - but it made enough sense that you could follow it. I cannot wait to pick up the second, because the end of this one had me screaming.
