8 full months in, this is definitely a contender for my favorite book of the year. Dykman bikes from Mexico to Canada and back again, following the route of the Monarch butterfly migration, learning about herself and the monarchs along the way. She looks unflinchingly at issues threatening their phenomenal journey: climate change, deforestation, and farming monoculture. I listened one slow mile - or chapter - at a time and relished the adventure.

I hope to remember her spirit and her lessons throughout the years. She writes, β€œthe more I learned, the more reverent I became.” Amen. πŸ§‘πŸ–€πŸ€

I really struggled through this one, almost to the point where I didn't want to write a review. I bought the book expecting to learn more about monarch butterflies, and while there was plenty of scientific, anecdotal, and folklore information, I was distracted by all the bicycling. I had more anxiety over where the author would find a place to sleep at night versus the dropping number of monarch butterflies. While I am in awe of the sheer athleticism, bravery, and determination for Dykman to solo ride so many miles, the arrangement of the bicycling interwoven with the science of the butterflies felt erratic and at times gave me whiplash.

An brave and impressive road trip taken from Mexico to Canada, following the yearly migration of monarch butterflies. I'd love to visit the forest where they spend the winter in Mexico.

Did not like the authors tone right off the bat.
