Book Review

Just finished this amazing book about the Monarch migration in North America.

This is a great book about a superhero activist who completed a solo, 10,201 mile bike ride following the Monarchs on their migration from Mexico to Canada and back! I even got the experience of attending a virtual book event with the author and the amazing Monarch champion Chip Taylor of Monarch Watch.

Sara meets so many wonderful people along the way as she spread the word about the desperate situation of the Monarchs. She inspired me to do more for these amazing creatures and I know she will do so for you!

What an absolutely incredible journey. A few years ago, we started rearing Monarchs with a head of steam. The more I’ve learned about them, the more I have been interested in their journey and every other aspect. I absolutely see myself in Mexico during the migration someday, it is a huge dream of mine, and this story really spoke to my heart. So many things Sara said made me internally squeal with joy. Like minded people are hard to find. Every Monarch I release makes my heart soar. I loved this story so much and knowing there are so many people involved in keeping Monarchs going fills me with hope.

Sara's journey is absolutely beautiful. I loved the stories she shares about her trip, and enjoyed learning more about monarchs as well. It was wonderful reading about her deep passion for the monarchs, as well as her fears and insecurities. I also enjoyed reading her stories about the ice cream (especially that first one with the motorcyclist).

📚 The gist 📚: Sara undertakes a 10,201 mile bike ride to follow the stunning monarch butterfly migration and raise awareness about the human-caused environmental stressors threatening this incredible natural event.

DID NOT FINISH: 20%

I think if this was more of a book specifically about monarch butterflies and less of a memoir of self-discovery, I might want to continue this book. The parts about the butterflies were really interesting but her describing stopping every day and the various towns in Mexico just didn’t hook me in sadly. I’m glad I got to try it out as a Bonus Borrow from Hoopla because if not, I probably would be kicking myself for wasting a credit.

The tone of the book put me off and this was more bicycle travel memoir than it was a book about Monarch butterflies.  I started with the audio version and that was a mistake.  I didn't like the reader's voice and that set me off to a bad start with this book that I couldn't shake once I ditched the audible version for print.
