I absolutely loved this book! Age of Myth is exactly the kind of thing that I've been looking for when it comes to adult fantasy books. I'll definitely be reading the rest of the Legends of the First Empire series. :)

review to come... I feel bad about not liking it as much as I liked Riyria. :/
Here we go. SO. I LOVE RIYRIA. I do. I found it back in 2013 and it was my jam. I had been on a huge thieves/rogues kick and I found the books and devoured them all within a month. It gave me everything I wanted. Then when the prequels came out later that year, I devoured those too. Everything fit together and I loved it so much.
Now, this takes place 300 years in the future... and I have no idea what the heck I read. It had a different feel that Riyria, sure, and it had a WHOLE truckload of new lingo/names (I got used to Robin Hobb's world within a span of a couple months so that didn't bother me learning a new plateau of stuff). ... But honestly, it pains me that this book wasn't thrilling me and that I'm rating it so low.
Could it be the characters? I felt like their interactions with one another weren't intriguing, fun... they felt forced. I liked Raithe... and I liked Malcolm. Yet I couldn't get enough of them in the book and that's the problem. I felt that if the book focused on them more (like it did with Royce and Hadrian) I'd find someone to journey with... but with all the characters and the not so interesting dilemma they're currently facing I couldn't really care.
Another problem I had... was for a story taking place 300 years before Riyria, I felt their dialogue was too modern for me. 'whatever' came up a couple times from characters mouths and I was like, 'huh?'.... This is Michael's world, and if that's how they talk 300 years before castles and etc... then, well, that's how they talk. (I just thought they'd be a little more gruff or not so 'flippant' in their responses.)
It looked as if the story was going somewhere, but I have no idea if I'll stick around. Maybe when all the books come out I'll read them and see if I enjoy them better when I marathon them. For now, I'll focus on the Royce/Hadrian side of things.

A beautiful fun magical tale. With characters you can't help but fall for and laugh with! Persephone you are officially the only character of the name I've enjoyed in a story thus far. Loved the epic magic battle at the end!

The whole genre is a bit tired, things did not change much from Tolkein, with all the elves and dwarfs. This book is a pop-song that follows the well-know recipe for a summer hit, but offers nothing new. Although well written, we will forget it next summer.
(There is a huge room for invention. Check, for example, Game of Thrones, Gentlemen Bastards, or Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell)

I enjoyed this book. I’d suggest it to anyone who likes epic fantasies or LOTR. The book is a little slow to start with but as the story progresses I found it to be more engaging. What I like about the story is that while you start off thinking that this is simply going to to be a war of humans verses elves, things become much more complex. I’m curious to see how this story continues, to see Persephone grows as a leader, and Raithe becomes the hero. I’m also curious to see where the elves find themselves in this story. I’m certainly excited to see how this series evolves.
