Perkins provided me with a thought-provoking, wonderfully written insight into American Smart Cinema, as confusing and ambiguous as it is… Many of her theories inspired and encouraged me to ask and answer highly significant questions in my dissertation, and I owe a lot of my understanding of some distinctly 'smart' scenes in Terry Zwigoff's Ghost World (2001), to her. It can be hard to regurgitate a beautifully constructed film into stimulating theory, but Perkins does it so well, to the point where she makes me rewatch old favourites and rekindle a very specific kind of love and appreciation for them. I would recommend this to film students and film enthusiasts alike, because its content isn't strictly theoretical and academic, it's just really bloody interesting!
