«O meu tema é a memória, esse fantasma alado que pairou sobre mim numa manhã cinzenta de tempos de guerra.
Estas memórias, que são a minha vida - porque nada possuímos com certezas excepto o passado - sempre estiveram comigo.»

Deserves to be regarded as a classic of English literature. The first part in Oxford is a brilliantly parody of the extremely advantaged upper class under graduates. From then on the novel becomes a darker melodrama principally concerned with relationships and religion. Waugh cleverly makes the friendship between Flyte and Ryder an ambiguous one. And it's this relationship that opens the door for Ryder into the world of the rich and privileged Marchmain family.

i wanted to like this so bad because i love saltburn and i can see this was heavy-handed inspiration for it, but the writing was not engaging to me at all and i struggled through two thirds before giving up. i simply didn’t care about any of them.
