Read it in 24 hours. Informational & emotional. Sad about my own ignorance and shocked by all that science education lacks. Important to be conscious of my biases as I practice medicine & to be a more careful consumer of medical research.

EVERYBODY should read this. It is the story of medical history, a treatise on medical ethics, the story of a search for answers by a writer and the history of a family.
There are many answers here. And it is a great beginning to a necessary conversation.

I started listening to this book, but quickly abandoned that for a print copy -- the book simply has too many facts (that I wanted to make note of) to be a reasonable audiobook. Rebecca Sloot has written a wonderful story. It is historical and thought provoking, while remaining surprisingly unbiased. This is a book I whole heartedly recommend, and a story that I will continue to follow. I feel personally indebted to the research conducted with HeLa, and also interested in the debate regarding ownership/patenting of research findings, tissue samples, genetic breakthrus, etc.
