3.5 ⭐️ I have a lot to say…
To make it short, take all the popular romantasies and then take one scene from each book and you’ll have this. I knew that this book was said to be highly inspired by other books but is it inspiration at this point ?? The funniest part reading this was me starting a game : try and guess from what book a scene was taken from hahaha
The entire book is a copy and paste and I have to admit I’m surprised this even got published
All that being said, I didn’t hate it and I actually really like Kai. I don’t like the love triangle thing going on especially not when it involves brothers. I have a feeling this will go on in book 2 and it’s already painful because I don’t like Kitt…The trials were boring, nothing impactful happened and I’m still not sure of their purpose. The number of times Pae would have died if not for Kai was crazyyyyy and I still can’t believe nobody caught the lie regarding her « power »

This book felt like I had read it before. It didn't feel that original, and the pacing was off. Not for me.

This book reads like every other YA fantasy novel and finding out the author was 18 when she wrote it makes so much sense. I could tell there was heavy inspiration from Red Queen and the Hunger Games in regards to the plot and set up of the trials. Three stars because I was solidly entertained and liked the characters, but boy was the writing cringe at times.
My favorite thing about this book was the banter between Kai and Paedyn (also what is this name?). I thought the romance between them was actually pretty cute and the tension was fun, although they were threatening to kill each other in every scene (but in a flirty way).
I did feel like this book dragged at some points and did not need to be 500 pages or have dual POV. The writing was also pretty cringe in places, mainly in Kai's POV when thinking about Paedyn. The author really loves alliteration and repetitive sentences. I will include my favorite cringe moments here.
"She is the embodiment of a bad decision. The twin of danger and desire. The fine line between deadly and divine. And I can feel myself drowning."
"Not until I looked into a pair of ocean-blue eyes and realized that perhaps drowning was a beautiful thing. Not until I looked into a pair of sky-blue eyes and realized that perhaps falling was a peaceful thing. I'd never thought about what my favorite color was before because I hadn't seen one that was worthy of the title. Until now, that is."
"That, and terrified. Terrified of what she is doing to me. She is a vision, a nightmare, a dream. A grim reaper clad in black, come to steal my soul and my heart. I've never seen something so beautiful, so bold, so blatantly wrong for me. She is a devil. She is a deity. She is a man's downfall in human form. She is my downfall."
"Why did I ever think I could have her, ever think she would have me? Because beasts don't get the beauty."
TLDR I enjoyed this book despite its cringe moments, so if you catch me reading book two, mind your business.
