The story was a little odd, but the illustrations and the little girl were charming.

A young girl consults a rabbit about what to get for her mother for a birthday present. As they discuss the options, they walk through lovely pastoral scenery, and we imagine a perfectly gorgeous spring day. The illustrations by Sendak show the girl and rabbit as equals, their expressions even matching at times. She is not imagining this conversation - it's happening. This would make a good addition to our PreK color unit.

How do you find a gift for someone? You might start with their favorite colors...

Read as a prop story to kindergarten, the kids all laughed at some of Mr. Rabbit's suggestions for the little girl. The props just made them laugh even more!

a lot of repetition in this book that introduces children to colors, fruit and nature. Children might like it, but it didn’t move me. Gives me of Alice in Wonderland vibes.

This is a book I have visited several times and like most of Sendak's work, I tended to not get on with it at first. It is only through slow, careful reading that I began to see how much I like it. This is early Sendak but the illustrations of the gardens that the little girl and Mr. Rabbit visit are stunning through his use of soft watercolour. If you want to know more on where he got his artistic ideas from for this book then go check out the work of Winslow Homer. At this point, Sendak started to listen to a lot of classical music whilst drawing and painting and you get the sense that the music has been his muse in some of these scenes. The story itself is a simple, almost fairy-tale like in its composition of repetitiveness and animal characters.

An old Caldecott Honor book with art by [a:Maurice Sendak|4489|Maurice Sendak|https://d2arxad8u2l0g7.cloudfront.net/authors/1201028880p2/4489.jpg]. Sort of a counter argument that would say that simple and old can't also be good. This is basically a color book. But it's also a book of imagination and problem solving and big words and small. With good enough art and a girl that stands on her own except for her friend the imaginary rabbit.
