Cool, thanks for making me cry again, Spider-Man. Glad we have this constant in our seventeen-year relationship.

I can't tell if I'm reading these collected editions in the right sequence as a narrative, and that bugs me. Seeing some characters I've heard about from other Marvel comic story lines makes me curious about them, too.

More like 4.5 stars, really. But a smidge closer to 4...

So I LOVED the first volume of Ultimate Spider-Man. Miles had my heart instantly, both the first time I read it way back and more recently. I still do think Miles is a fantastic character and such a more poignant Spider-Man in today’s society given how often Spidey’s role finds him ostracised by the very people he’s trying to help.

The reason I don’t like volume two as much is that it feels less like Miles’ story, and more like Miles’ part in other people’s story. A more hardcore fan of Marvel might enjoy that and I presume it all plays in to some bigger story in the Marvel Universe and, in all fairness, the narrative did offer a lot of context as to who these other characters were but for someone who’s relatively new to marvel comics there were plenty of points I felt like I wasn’t the target audience any more. To be fair, maybe I’m not!

All in all - I enjoyed it, would have preferred if the other characters were supporting roles in Miles’ story rather than him be the supporting role in theirs.
