The usual tropes for a cozy mystery are firmly in place, as are the plot devices that keep the obvious clues at bay until they’re convenient.

The narrator was solid. I didn’t have to suspend disbelief too much. It’s clearly a white-raced privileged world, but I guess I’m used to that as an African American reader. Using baking as a meditation was fine, but it slowed the story down quite a bit. The relationship error from her husband wasn’t so compelling to me, and he’d be the reason I wouldn’t continue the series. I didn’t find him an interesting character.

I’ve yet to run into a cozy mystery series I really like, although some would describe the Richard Jury series as such. I’ve read most of those and would reread a few. More interesting than the little world presented here. I’m not a Gwyneth Paltrow fan.

Meet Your Baker by Ellie Alexander is the first book in Bakeshop Mysteries. It is an enjoyable cozy mystery. Juliet (Jules) Montague Capshaw has come home to Ashland, Oregon to her families’ bakeshop, Torte. Jules has been working on cruise ships for a number of years, but she needed to get away from her husband, Carlos. Jules comes home to work at Torte with her mother and figure out what she wants to do with her life. Instead of peace and quiet, Jules finds out her mother is having financial difficulties, a forest fire is wreaking havoc around the town, and someone gets murdered. Jules comes into the bakery one morning to find Nancy Hudson (who is rude, obnoxious, and nasty) dead in their kitchen. Ellie finds herself drawn into the investigation. Follow Jules as she bakes some delightful pastries and solves a murder mystery. I really enjoyed Meet Your Baker and cannot wait for the next book in this series! Happy Reading!

I’m so sorry to all the lovers of this book I just couldn’t stand the main character she was getting on my nerves accusing everyone of the murder and then they something endearing and it turns to “for some reason, I trusted them” it took me forever to finish bc I was unfortunately bored /: BUT! I liked that at the end of the book they included recipes for the things they mention in the book! That was fun!

This isn't the cozy mystery series for me, sadly.

The crime scene contamination and public health violations are just....

After enjoying Alexander's cozy mystery brewery series I decided to try her bake shop series. Even though I am more into breweries, I did really enjoy this book too. Just nice to have something that is very light and quick to read.
