I was looking for more books by Taro Yashima on ILL. I really like his work and I thought this was another children’s book. I got it and it’s a short middle grade story. Taro’s signature artwork and minimal feel are here. It’s a lovely story and a quick read, but I really loved the story.

This is about a boy living in the mountains of Japan one winter in the past. His father, a hunter, catches a baby fox and they chain it up in the shed to sell at the end of winter for much money. The boy is drawn into a drama that plays out. Eventually, the foxes parents show up and they do what they can to free the baby. There is some does the baby fox escape or not. The boy does not tell his parents about the matter and watches until one day the father sees the parents and tries to kill the foxes.

I really do love the ending. I think this is a nuanced story, but I love how simply it’s told and just how much it touched me deep down. It’s a lovely little book. I hate to think that this story might be forgotten. It should still be read. I’m glad I gave this a try and I want to read more of Taro’s stories. He is a unique voice and he tells stories of complexity in simple ways. Crow Boy is still one of my favorite Caldecott books I think. It has stuck with me. Taro is a powerful story teller.
