2.5 stars.

This book is a mess. Or maybe I just don't belong in Maggie Stiefvater's head. I don't understand her brain, I think. Or it just doesn't make sense. I dunno. Maybe I'm too old for YA books now. I just couldn't follow why characters were doing what they were doing or the magic, or the scenes, or the conversations. I dunno. I followed the story fine. I understood the words. It was just...messy.

Also, I didn't like the characters. They didn't make sense most of all. First, you got Blue, who knows she will kill her true love with a kiss, so she's supposedly determined at the beginning never to date boys or at least stay away from them. However, also in the beginning, she boldly states she is vain. She takes the first opportunity she has to join up with the boys. She says she wants to go along to find Glendower because she's never seen anything magical like the rest of her family, yet in the very first chapter she DOES see a spirit. She's observed to be practical, but I never got that feeling from anything she does. And that's just Blue. The other biggest offender is Adam.

I hated Adam. He's the worst. He's a contradiction because he doesn't want to take anything from his rich friends. He wants to get everything he has on his own. YET he wants to find Glendower to get everything he wants? How does that make sense. Also, his complete unwillingness to accept anything is infuriating. It doesn't make him honorable. It makes him proud and annoying. We're meant to feel sorry for him because of his dad, but sorry, I didn't. It might have just been the way he was written, but he was easily my least favorite character.

Then there's Gansey. I didn't like him either. He didn't seem real to me. He's described so oddly, I couldn't imagine him to be real.

So much of this story relies on coincidence.

Anyway. I didn't hate this book, despite all the problems I had with it. I liked the feeling of the setting. I didn't always jive with Maggie's writing, but she's good at settings and using descriptive words. She just tends to use very odd conversations and plots. And characters. Sometimes the writing really didn't jive with me. It was a little too quirky I think for my tastes. But I totally get why people like her books and even these characters. I liked Noah best. And there were some neat plot twists and reveals.

I just don't think it's for me. So, I won't be continuing this series most likely, which is unfortunate. I would have really loved to love this story. It had so much potential. There's just too much for me to overcome, I think.

this is the kind of book that makes me wish goodreads had a 4.5 star rating.
wow, impeccable. i didn't think i would like it, it was slow paced; but dear god, the idea of this book is so beautiful. also gansey is beautiful. and adam and ronan. and blue. really not sure about noah though sOZ but goddamn
there's no way this series can go well, not with gansey dying? unless he asks glendower to change his fate which could happen,, but blue saw him dead. im so sad. i just want gansey happy :(
