Pacing felt a bit weird, it was moreso a story in two parts rather than one continuous story, but it was fun (until the random moments the racism or weird comments about women hit).

The Land That Time Forgot
Written by: Edgar Rice Burroughs
Narrated by: David Stifel
Length: 4 hrs and 5 mins
Unabridged Audiobook
Release Date:07-03-13
Publisher: Audio Books by Mike Vendetti

The Land That Time Forgot is a classic by Edgar Rice Burroughs (better known for his Tarzan series). I was familiar with it only through the 1975 movie (it's so bad it is a joy to watch). I recently had the opportunity to listen to the audio book narrated by David Stifel. I had previously heard a book narrated by him which is why I chose this particular version. His narration did not disappoint.

The story takes place during World War I. A ship crossing the ocean is sunk by a German U-boat. The survivors are rescued but the same fate falls on their rescuers by the same U-boat. Events happen that leave the survivors and the Germans fighting for control of the U-Boat. About half the book is devoted to the struggle of each group trying to maintain control of the U-Boat. This back and forth power struggle leaves the U-boat open to sabotage and the group ends up in the south Pacific. It is here that the adventure truly begins.

Despite the compass and the best efforts at navigation, the U-boat is drawn south into freezing waters until they arrive at a land mass surrounded by massive cliffs. Seeking fresh water and food, the U-boat finds a way through the cliffs and discovers a land that is an evolutionary mess. There are life forms from every time period in the earth’s long history.

David Stifel does a very good job of narrating the story. He has no problem with different accents, American, German, Irish, English. His paces of the narration works well with the action in the story. The production values are very good. The sound is clear and the volume is at an equal level throughout.

The Land That Time Forgot is a wonderful adventure story. I enjoyed it enough that I am planning on finding the other two books in the series. If you are looking for a fun rollicking adventure, I recommend this audio book. I especially recommend David Stifel as a narrator as he is has shown himself to be an excellent one.

For a book promising dinosaurs, the dinosaurs showed up too late in my opinion. It was over a third into the book before we even reached "The Land That Time Forgot", then it took the characters a while to start exploring the land. So it made all the events that happened on the island feel rushed compared to the first third of the book.

Also, this is a spoiler but needs to be said
Spoiler Edgar did Nops dirty by getting rid of him off-screen. I am honestly reading the sequel "The People that Time Forgot" right away since I am curious to see if Nops is going to return or if Edgar really killed off the dog by just saying he disappeared one night.

The good:
- Full of action
- Good narrator for the audiobook version I listened to.

The Bad:
- The main character! UGH. Self centered entitled prick.
- The author clearly felt like not describing somethings, so just simply skipped them.
- Weak characters
- The main character
- The main character.

I HATED the main character. This book should be fun. Submarine hyjack, dinosaurs, tons of action.... Instead it was like pulling teeth. If the book were larger this would have been a dnf.

I enjoyed this more at age eighteen than at age fifty eight. I’m afraid forty years have made me more analytical, more critical, more rational, and more cynical.

When Burroughs published this in 1918 Piltdown Man had not yet been exposed as a hoax and terms like “negroid” and “Jap” were not yet intuitively racist and offensive. While, taken in the context of their time, such perceived transgressions are perfectly understandable, they nevertheless indelibly stamp the material as dated and the science, albeit fictional, as flawed.

I guess there are some touchstones of my youth that are best left to the fog of memory.

The Land that Time Forgot: I really enjoyed this book. It was surreal and yet told in such a way that I was able to suspend my disbelief. Although in the beginning there were a few difficult moments where it just seemed like the character had the worst luck in history. That being said, it did serve a purpose and get us to this lost world. I really enjoyed the characters especially the main character. He had a wonderful voice and presence and was able to bring the other characters and the scenery to life. I loved the different ape men and am very curious to see the secrets of Caprona in the next book.

The People that Time Forgot: Just started, love it so far.
