Never really grabbed me but it wasn’t that bad

This is my second time reading this and I feel I liked it more the second time. Cashore creates a vivid unique world of lovable characters and fantasy monsters.

The good: the world is unique in that there are monster morphs of regular species and they have unique traits. Monsters have power to control unit trained minds. Fire is a great heroine who just wants to be accepted and not just an object or monster. The characters are likable. The world is dark and violent at times but spaced with moments of sweetness and romance. It made me feel things, maybe even tear up at times. It's an addicting read.

The bad: some parts lag a bit and I wish the characters were a bit more fleshed out. I can't put my finger on it but something keeps it from 5 stars for me.

The ugly : Archer demanding Fire stay loyal only to him and being absolutely possessive while he sleeps with many other women. Fire knows about this but if he can sleep with anyone then Fire can too, or even just have attractive male friends. Double standard.

3.5 stars.

Unfortunately most of all the things that interested me with Graceling were missing in this installment, and it felt like we were largely falling back onto tropes and character dynamics that I find uninteresting. Didn’t hate it, but was largely bored with it.
Am still going to check out the next book, mostly with the hope that Bitterblue is going to be a more interesting protagonist to me than Fire was, but yeah I remember now why not much of this book had stuck in my mind from the first time I read it

I definitely like this more than the first book, but there were definitely some things that happened that were somewhat unnecessary to be included. This really could have been a stand alone book, maybe the two world come together and that's why things happen the way they do. I haven't even read the synopsis of the trio to see how they go together. Either way I really liked this book. Fire was a relatable character. There were times where I was like why is this girl crying, but when you remember all the things that she has to face along with being a young woman you can easily sympathize with her.

*4.5 Stars! I’m so annoyed with myself for taking so long to get to this book! This expands the world we got introduced to in Graceling and was so intense. This book had me in all of my feelings and at the edge of my seat and I can’t wait to continue onto Bitterblue!
