A great idea for a nonfiction picture book. And the 3rd book I've read of this author. Unfortunately other than the cover, I didn't like the art in this one nearly as much. And the text was a bit stilted too. And the choices made in telling this story was not compelling. And the marine iguanas just appeared swimming. The afterword could also have stronger. Not bad. But I was expecting better.
A beautifully illustrated introduction to evolution and the unique ecosystem of the Galápagos islands intended for ages 5 to 8.
Jason Chin has created a beautiful celebration of a place that has enchanted me since I was a child. In words that children of all ages will be able to understand and enjoy, he explains the Galapagos, evolution, and more. Well worth the read. Even the end papers are beautifully rendered to enhance the overall experience when reading.
Well researched, clearly written text, great illustrations, important topic...This book has it all. I especially liked the format of the illustrations. The small boxes demonstrating the changes in the animals could not have explained evolution more perfectly.
A beautifully illustrated and engaging informational story of evolution of species in the Galapagos based on scientific facts. More fact pages in the endnotes.
A picture book about evolution without using the word evolution. #bookaday
Does your child know how an island forms or changes over time? This book offers copious research and beautiful watercolors to tell the story of the Galapagos Islands, their vegetation, and their evolutionary biology at an elementary level. Your children will enjoy the frame by frame sequencing of wildlife adaptations as you explore each chapter in the islands’ history. The end of the book even provides a basic introduction to Darwin’s discoveries about the endemic species. Do not overlook the field guide-like endpapers. This is a charmingly engaging way to discover non-fiction!

It's as scientifically accurate as it can be while still taking liberties to make a story that has a mild plot. Lots of interesting animals and enough science to make sense but not so much to bore a child.
