This book was a solid 3.5 stars for me. I absolutely loved the characters at the beginning. In fact, when I was like 40-50% done with this book, I would have given it a solid 4 stars, if not 4.5. However, the characters let me down after the halfway point. There were a couple of spots that were gory/tough to read, but for the most part, the horror aspect wasn't that bad for me. I'm not a huge horror fan, so perhaps I liked the beginning when it hadn't delved too much into that genre.

Characters are unlikeable, especially the men, the "horror" was mostly gross.

This book cleverly combined horror, suspense, humor, and social commentary. I was surprised to learn that the author is a white man as this book directly addresses the way white people dismiss and take advantage of black people, the way men dismiss and take advantage of women, and the way money rules all.

Unfortunately the first half of the book was incredibly slow and difficult for me to get through. The book picked up more around the 60% mark. The pacing was uneven, and many scemes/chapters were superfluous. This might be a good book to study in an English class or discuss in a book club, but I likely will not read it again.

I think this book would be excellent adapted to the big screen.

Surprised by how good this was - incredibly readable, but also some excellent, insightful commentary (from a guy!) on the expectations placed on women and mothers, and the real danger that exists in that. The vampire's pretty bad, but is he really worse than her husband?
