This is the perfect short story to start with in my 6th grade classroom. It captures the students’ attention and they remember it years later as they tell me that one stood out for them.

You know, this reads EXACTLY as I remember the animated short when I was a child, sitting on the floor watching in the daycare center that kept me during the summers before I was old enough to stay home alone.
It also reads in a more adult fashion than I'd have imagined. The story is kind of visceral, grisly. It was nice to be a kid again for like a half an hour.

I like the odd methodical "aside" nature of Kipling's prose. Not much going on here... Humans and animals illustrating their nature in order for us to contrast with our own to whimsical effect. Short, no decisions. Observant.
I’ve always found this story incredibly boring. Just not for me
This story is one of my favorite Rudyard Kipling books!
